Purpose of Role

Lead and embed a strong process safety culture across the business. Provide expert guidance to managers and operators on safe, efficient chemical plant design and operation. Ensure compliance with legislation, company policies, and industry standards through practical application of technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure chemical and safety processes, waste streams, and equipment comply with legislation, guidance, and internal procedures.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment to identify and mitigate risks, prioritising workforce safety.
  • Act as technical authority for HAZOP/CHAZOP studies and develop Cause & Effect Safety Matrices.
  • Provide chemical engineering and plant design expertise across site operations.
  • Liaise with regulators and consultants to maintain IPPC permit compliance.
  • Develop and deliver a site-wide Process/Chemical Safety Awareness Programme.
  • Oversee chemical handling, storage, and waste management, including recycling streams and Legionella control.
  • Drive continuous improvement in process safety within facilities and cleanroom areas.
  • Monitor and report leading and lagging safety indicators.
  • Lead development and implementation of safe operating procedures for chemical plant and equipment.
  • Ensure hazards presented by transporting and storing chemicals, gases, and solutions remain controlled.
  • Review chemical distribution and waste streams for hazard compatibility and safe management.
  • Own and manage processes, procedures, and contractors associated with Legionella prevention.
  • Develop and implement training and procedures for loss of containment and spill control.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on chemical and waste stream optimisation.

Main Tasks

  • Identify and control hazards in chemical plants, waste streams, and equipment.
  • Optimise plant operations and design for safe, efficient performance.
  • Apply ISO14001 and ISO45001 standards.
  • Lead HAZOP/CHAZOP studies for facilities and cleanroom equipment.
  • Manage effluent processes, scrubber systems, out-of-specification tanks, and hazardous water recovery systems.
  • Oversee daily plant operations, troubleshoot issues, and ensure production safety.
  • Rationalise plant operations to strengthen the Basis of Safety.
  • Research and develop new chemical processes and environmentally responsible equipment designs (e.g., OSWS, solvent handling, distribution, and collection systems).
  • Implement KPIs and dashboards to track performance.
  • Ensure compliance with CHIP 2002, COSHH 2002, and REACH regulations.
  • Lead safe introduction of new chemicals and raw materials.
  • Maintain and improve Emergency Response Protocols, focusing on alarm investigation processes and training.
  • Coach and mentor staff, ensuring competency in plant operations.
  • Produce and maintain operating manuals and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Train operators and technicians in safe, efficient practices.
  • Review SDS and ensure COSHH compliance in risk assessments.
  • Support incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Engage with HSE, Environment Agency, and other regulatory bodies.

Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years in chemical engineering or chemistry within manufacturing.
  • Experience working with hazardous chemicals and plant.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement process safety systems and programmes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Greater than 5 years' experience in chemical engineering or chemistry roles with associated responsibility (preferred).
  • Background in high-volume chemical or production/manufacturing environments.

Education & Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry (required).
  • NEBOSH Diploma with minimum 3 years' experience.
